When is the last time you had your oil changed? When is the last time you checked your oil change sticker to see if you were due up?

Changing your oil is the first line of defense for your motor. Too many companies are pushing longer and longer oil change intervals, and we’re here to tell you the truth: You should never go more than 3,000 miles on an oil change in a gas motor, or 5-8,000 in a diesel (depending on how the truck is driven).

Engine oil is what lubricates your motor so that all the moving parts continue moving, when the oil gets dirty it no longer does a good job of lubricating. On top of that, newer engines have very very small oil passages to move the oil to different parts of the engine, those oil passages can become clogged if the oil moving through them is full of particles, meaning you can be starving parts of your engine for oil.

What makes oil dirty? Well, there are a few things, metal particles from your engine, dirt from the environment, and the biggest one, filth from the fuel you use. Metal from your engine is unavoidable, but regular oil changes can help lessen that. Dirt from the environment can be lessened by making sure you keep your air filters changed, and again, changing your oil regularly.

The biggest contributor to dirty oil is fuel. when the gas gets burned in your engine the dirt and particles get left behind and end up in your oil. Gasoline used to be a lot cleaner, if you found a car in a barn that had been there for a couple of decades you would be able to fire it up with the gas in the tank with no issues. Gas today is not like the gas of yesteryear. It’s full of ethanol, which attracts water, and water is dirty. On top of that, gas stations do not clean their tanks nearly enough.

So, if you want to get the most life out of your vehicle we recommend only getting gas at higher end gas stations, Hucks, Fivestar, and BP is usually who we use in our area, or if there’s a gas station near you that was built recently, their tanks are new, so they’re usually clean; and get your oil changed at regular intervals.

While we recognize that changing your oil is not the most difficult thing and a lot of people prefer to do it themselves, Peck’s Customs recommends getting your oil changed by a trustworthy mechanic that will also do an inspection of your vehicle. We save a lot of customers a lot of money by finding problems when they are small during oil change inspections as opposed to waiting for the problem to worsen to the point that they notice it.

When the Peck family moved here from the west coast, we drove in an RV from the 1970’s. No joke, the thing had brown and yellow shag carpet. When we got here, we parked it in the back yard and left it there. It was basically forgetten until a friend of a friend told us that he wanted to buy the motor out of it.

I’m sure we weren’t aware of the adventure that this would become. It started when us kids came home to find a stranger in the back waist deep in the front end of the RV, saving us from ever agian having to take a trip in the rolling turd. It soon became joking around with Jacob every weekend when he came to work on it. He would bring us a case of coke everytime he came, even though he worked for Pepsi. He helped me with business classes when I started college. If only the project was as easy as the friendship.

It was difficult because he wanted to put this gigantic engine out of an RV into a 2000 Dodge Dakota.

When the engine came back from the machinist we had to figure out how to put it in. It was too large for the engine compartment, so we had to rip out the interior and everything on the firewall and move the whole thing back six inches. James had to piece together custom headers to maintain power and sound while making it fit. When it was done, it was an absolute masterpiece, and definitely one of a kind.

See a video here of the beast

Well here at Peck’s Customs we would do just about anything for the brave men and women that defend our country, so we busted butt and made it happen. We had to rush shipping, work our days off, and even push a couple of smaller jobs back, luckily people are pretty understanding when you tell them its for an active duty member of the military. But we got it done, and it turned out pretty awesome.

This is what we would call a level one JK build, everything is mostly cosmetic, fenders, bumpers, new top. There are a few modifications to make it more capable including a Rough Country lift, Toyo Tires, RPM steering, and an AEV programmer to make it all work together.

We got the Jeep done just in time, and he absolutely loved it!

The owner of this beauty bought it at auction after it was flooded down in Louisiana. He brought it to us becasue we had already done some frame repair on an older Jeep of his, so he trusted that we knew what we were doing. It was basically stock when it got here, there was a 2 inch budget lift in it and an aftermarket front bumper, but other than that it was untouched. We talked about what he wanted and it was decided that this would be a one and done kind of deal, he wanted the works, as well as fixing all the damage caused by the water.

We started out with all the easy stuff, picked out wheels and tires: Raceline and Toyo MT’s, bumpers, fenders, rock sliders, body armor, the hood Louvre: all Poisen Spider, all the fun cosmetic stuff. We ordered all of the major components that we knew we needed, RPM steering, Adam’s driveshafts, the Rubicon Express lift, and the Currie Antirock; when packages started coming in it looked like Christmas in our storage bay. The owner even showed up just as James got back with a load of stuff that he had to pick up at the freight depot and helped us unload it all so we could open it faster and look at all the new parts.

We sent several of the components off to get powder coated, we recommend it over factory powder coat or paint because it holds up better, and if you do scratch it there’s no flaking, so it doens’t spread. James surprised the owner by having some of the pieces color matched to the paint, it really makes it all pop. It’s all about the details.

As we began working on it, we started to discover the extent of the water damage. Beyond the smell, the electronics were a mess, nothing worked. It was discovered that the water had gotten into the axles and destroyed the gears, so we ordered and installed 4.88 Yukon gears front and rear, as well as Yukon axle shafts in the rear and RCV axles in the front. All of the parts we use and recommend are thoroughly researched and chosen based on James’s 30 years of experience.

The interior was a mess so everything was removed and cleaned, and we lined the inside with Raptor Liner, an incredibly durable rubberized liner that holds up through anything and is way easier to clean than carpet, and since the owner is a farmer thats a pretty good selling point. Both axles were reinforced with Artec truss kits so the weight of the 37 inch tires wouldn’t cause bending, skid plates were installed to protect the undercarriage, and everything was painted with a durable spray paint to withstand rust, plus it looks really nice.

In the end, almost everything electrical was replaced including, but not limited to, the body control module, window motors, switches, a variety of sensors, and the antilock brake motor. We ended up adding a RIPP supercharger, gaining both power and fuel economy. There are several other things we did, exhaust and such that brought the whoe thing together as a whole. When it was picked up the owner basically drove a brand new vehicle out of the driveway.

We helped him build his dream, do you need help getting yours? Call today to discuss your options.
